Those With Reasonable Expectations Will Be Entertained

This movie gets beaten up on quite a bit by critics, so my expectations were as low as they could be before watching...perhaps that is why I was so surprised to find some nice moments in this film.

There is no question that this could never be considered a war classic, but to dismiss it outright simply by its reputation, or ones pre-conceived notions, is to do oneself a disservice. For being a low budget movie, there was some nice location shooting, quality set design, decent special effects (for the time), and good quality stock footage. There is some poor editing here and there, and a few technical goofs in the film, but, that aside, I must say that I found the direction to be quite good, overall, for a drive-in movie...and the score was nicely done, as well.

With only one or two exceptions, the cast was very competent, with Audie Murphy and Gary Crosby doing a nice job, as well as a few enjoyable performances supporting them. The plot had great potential, but the script was poorly written and we didn't get to spend enough time with the people we are supposed to care about. Dolores Michaels is gorgeous, so we can understand why Audie Murphy and Alejandro Rey would both be attracted to her, but she has no real chemistry with either man, so it is hard to get swept up in the love triangle. The characters are written to be very one-dimensional, so the plot points and drama never get a chance to make an impact.

The feeling I got at the end of watching this film was that all of the elements were there for a good movie, but it just missed. That being said, I give it a 5 out of 10 for the enjoyment of watching Audie Murphy, as well as a few nice acting and directorial moments. Prepare yourself for a 1960s drive-in movie level of quality, and you will find moments to enjoy throughout.

Dream of a Nightmare

In what was to be his final, incomplete film, Andrzej Munk gives an insight into an "island in time", as the narrator calls it. A woman on an ocean cruiser meets what seems to be a person from her own past - a past where she was overseer in the Auschwitz concentration camp, and the other a prisoner. They were bond together by a strange link, which in the view of guard (Liza) was generally build up by some sort of respect and protection, whereas the actual events that follow Liza reminiscences leave no doubt about her participation in the inhumanity and her guild. From the point of view of Marta, the surviver (or is it someone else?), the "relationship" was different. Munks pictures show us two sides of the story in a dream-like atmosphere: Black and white, eerie music, haunting pictures. Though a totally different content, the aesthetic atmosphere recalls 'La Jetee' by Chris Marker, filmed around the same time. In all, a short but intense viewing experience that achieves great emotional impact. Way ahead of it's time.

A murderous religious cult is way-laying travellers and stealing goods in nineteenth century India. As the disappearances mount and trade becomes difficult, the British East India Company is forced to act. But they give the job to an upper-class officer completely out-of-touch with the country rather than the obvious candidate who has been in India for years and well understands the people and culture.

Review :

Whoever rules decides the truth.

The Stranglers of Bombay is out of Hammer Film Productions. It's directed by Terence Fisher and written by David Zelag Goodman. It stars Guy Rolfe, Jan Holden, Andrew Cruickshank, George Pastell, Marne Maitland and Paul Stassino. Music is by James Bernard and cinematography by Arthur Grant.

For hundreds of years there existed in India a perverted religious sect, dedicated to the wanton destruction of human life....

So secret was this savage cult that even the British East Indian Company, rulers of the country at the time, was unaware of their existence....

So it begins, a compact and often violent retelling of the Thuggee Cult in India in the 1820s. It was considered strong stuff back on release and had the head suits at the BBFC shifting uneasily in their office chairs. It's a film that has also fallen unfairly into the realm where political correctness dwells, where some folk are seemingly obsessed with decrying old movies for their outdated political portrayals. This deserves better, for it's a very good script, where although the history is difficult to pin down as being correct, it does at least show a care and attention to detail where the Thugee Cult is concerned.

It's also a good old adventure yarn, full of intrigue, peril and detective work. Fisher directs at a clip, never allowing the plot to stagnate, and the low budget afforded the project is barely evident amongst some very effective sets. Cast are mostly good value for money, with lead players Rolfe perfectly restrained as an officer desperately trying to be heard and Pastell owning the film as the High Priest of Kali; in fact he is revelling in the bad guy role. Bernard provides an ear banging effective musical accompaniment.

Torture, maiming, heroics and a clever mongoose, something for everyone here! 7/10

Review :

Scott Plus Boetticher minus Ranown

This is a decent western—how could it not be since it stars Randolph Scott, always a cowboy who could make you believe it. Here he's a cavalry officer charged with getting gold shipments back east for the Union war effort. Trouble is there are Southern sympathizers in town, including his romantic rival (Duggan) and the hired gunsel (Pate); on the other hand, Scott's only help is a one-armed ex-Union soldier and his eye-catching wife (Dante & Steele).

Most of the action occurs in town or at the stagecoach way station, but we do get some well-chosen scenic shots in Warner Color. Also, Dante makes a likable ally for Scott, as he shows us how to fire a rifle with only one hand; at the same time, he and Scott play off one another really well. However, Mayo's role looks like an inessential add-on, maybe for marquee value.

Unfortunately, that final shootout is not up to Boetticher's usual standards— for example, Mace (Pate) looks like he wants to get shot, standing in the middle of the street as bullets fly. Speaking of the versatile Michael Pate, he seems to have been in about every sage opera of the period. But then he's got such a different look, so well suited to playing baddies.

Anyway, the overall result is not on par with Boetticher's classic Ranown series of westerns, made at about the same time, (The Tall T 1957, et al.). It's a comparison that may indicate the importance of producer Harry Joe Brown to that exceptional series. Nonetheless, Westbound is still worth a look-see as Scott turns in another fine performance.

The best of the series

This is my favourite of the lot, a funny and swiftly paced comedy with hilarious performances. Like 'Carry On Sergeant' this has the feel of a 'Police Academy' film made in a more innocent time, with funny jokes and charm and other things lacking in those later films.

Anyway. When the local police station is hit by a bout of flu, a bunch of coppers straight out of training school are sent out to cover for the sick bobbies; needless to say they blunder their way through their beats and enrage the Inspector (Erik Barker, excellent). Watching over them is understanding Sergeant Sid James, who's also really good.

The whole cast is great here, actually: Kenneth Connor, always my favourite of the regular cast, is absolutely hilarious as a superstitious copper; he acts more energetically with his nose and eyebrows than most of the others do with their entire bodies! Also brilliant are Kenneth Williams, Leslie Phillips, Joan Sims (very sexy here) and Charles Hawtrey, who as usual looks as though he's having the time of his life. Hattie Jaques is extremely warm and appealing as the superior officer with a soft spot for James, and the whole lot of them are great fun to watch.

Do all the gags land? No, there are bits and pieces that fall flat, but in general this is a lot of fun.

Witty and enjoyable

First of all I like the way the authentic witticisms of Oscar Wilde have been woven into the script. His sarcastic and pointed remarks derived from a keen observation of the morals, pomposity and hypocrisy of late Victorian England make for intelligent and amusing dialogue between the characters.

Peter Finch (Oscar Wilde) delivers lines with a certain flourish, but I think he could be even more flamboyant for such a man was Wilde. John Fraser plays the moody Bosie as Oscar's current lover with a balanced mixture of effeminate charm and petulance. Best acting role is that of Lionel Jeffreys as the Marquis of Queensbury. Make no mistake his character comes through loud and clear. He gives a remarkable portrayal of his utter disgust when his 21 year old son Bosie defies him and continues his relationship with Oscar, a man of middle age and married. All London is gossiping and there is much clicking of tongues. Mrs. Wilde played by beautiful Yvonne Mitchell stands by in utter dismay and disapproval.

The courtroom scene gives Oscar the opportunity to deliver more witty lines and to describe his inner feelings about true love...interesting because one is not too sure what he is about to say next. One gets the feeling that Oscar has chosen the path of self-destruction...or is he just being his theatrical self?

After he does his prison sentence with hard labour he is supposed to look tired and ill, but I fail to notice much of a change in his demeanour. He should be much paler with a worn down look. This would command more sympathy. Oscar's sexual adventures around the streets of London are not discussed to any extent nor portrayed in this film. If they had been given more prominence we would perhaps have felt justified in agreeing with the jury's decision. As it is , the sordid details of his sexual encounters are played down and because the film is presented in this way we feel rather sad that this great playwright both loving and generous should suffer so much at the hands of those who tried to destroy him.

The last, golden days of Morecambe...

As someone who lives only a couple of miles away from where this film was set, it makes me practically WEEP to see how busy and vibrant Morecambe used to be in the 50s/60s. OK, so the film is about how it's passed its heyday, but compared to how it is now - seeing the same scenery (it's hardly changed) - the Midland Hotel, The Winter Gardens (now a nightclub), it's hard not to get painful pangs of nostalgia.

This is ultimately a depressing film - Archie is one of those people who deals with tragedy by "blanking" it out with bad jokes. In the film he seduces the winner (2nd place) of a beauty contest - a woman old enough to be his daughter. Shortly after the film, Laurence Oliver married Joan Plowright who actually PLAYED his daughter in this film. Anyone for irony?

There are some wonderfully subtle takes on British "class" - I love Thora Hird (a long way from Praise Be and Stannah Stairlifts here) as the grasping mum of the Beauty-contest winner, while Brenda de Banzie is great as neurotic, looked-over, teary, nervy Phoebe - "I've got a new job in Woolworths, on the electrical counter. It's OK, but the girls are a bit common." Well Phoebe, you'll be pleased to know that the branch of Woolworths is still there...

The heart is own but the love is the other's

Director Kishore Sahu gave Indian cine-lovers many good movies especially in the black and white era. One such classic movie is Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraaee (1960) starring Raaj Kumar, Meena Kumari and Naadira. This movie not only tells a heart-conquering love story but also underscores the significance of the noble medical profession.

Kind-hearted orphan girl Karuna (Meena Kumari) joins a hospital as a nurse and comes into the contact of Dr. Sushil Varma (Raaj Kumar). Since both possess hearts of gold, filled with mercy, kindness, benevolence and humanity; they start liking each other (in fact, loving each other within their hearts). However Dr. Sushil has to marry Kusum (Naadira) due to the obligations of her father upon himself and his family. Proud (of her father's wealth), sniffy and nagging wife Kusum makes life hell for not only Dr. Sushil but also his widow mother (Pratima Devi) and his younger sister Munni (Baby Naaz). On the other hand, heartbroken Karuna suddenly comes to know of Dr. Sushil's silent love for her. Then she does not have any option but to shed tears over this cruel joke played by the destiny with both of them. She tries to quit the hospital but can't. When Kusum comes to know that her husband loves Karuna within his heart, her womanly jealousy crosses all the limits. Finally the movie reaches its happy ending with the union of the lovers.

Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraaee (the heart is own and the love is the other's) takes the viewer to the era when love of a male and a female was not express but silent. Still the loving hearts have always been able to listen to the silent calls of each other. And that love is reliable even on the screen. The scene in which Karuna sees her name written by Dr. Sushil on pieces of paper and on neutral things and she is able to listen to the love-filled sighs coming from his heart, echoing her name only, is just superb. Anybody who has loved someone in his / her life can identify with this scene.

Besides, medicine has always been considered a noble profession (though now it is also a means to earn more and more money only for the majority of the people involved). And this movie emphatically underscores this fact that the people joining this profession whether as doctors or as nurses, should understand that their patients have greater right on their lives as compared to their own right and the right of their family members. The family members of such people have to adjust to the occupational demands of them and should not be irritating or resenting towards their activities, else they won't be able to do justice to their duty and their profession. Through the characters of various patients admitted in the hospital ward, the moviemaker has stressed the need for the doctors and the nurses to keep unlimited patience while dealing with them, in addition to the kindness and sympathy which the patients require from them.

To make the movie as an entertaining one, the director has infused humour through some patients which is over the top at places. All the same, this movie is filled with sentiments and it shows that emotional bonds can develop in any setting between the people suffering from common pains. It's a movie which deeply moves the viewer at many places. And it also underscores the fact that if the life-partner is non-understanding, supercilious and irritating; he / she may not only snatch success from the other one but also make life worse than hell for her / him.

Performance wise assessing, Raaj Kumar has given a very impressive performance in this movie without any overtones. Meena Kumari has not only scored in the acting department but she has looked quite beautiful too. It's definitely one of her best movies. Om Prakash impresses in his cameo (as a patient). Shammi (as another nurse who is Karuna's close friend), Pratima Devi as Dr. Sushil's mother, Baby Naaz as his younger sister, Kumar as the head of the hospital etc. have done justice to their roles. However, it's mainly Naadira's movie, perhaps her best and the most memorable one. No viewer can forget her knockout performance as the proud, ill-mannered and nagging woman.

Shankar-Jaikishan has given unforgettable music in this movie with the beautiful and touching lyrics having been penned by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra. The music of this movie boasts of Lata's immortal song - Ajeeb Daastaan Hai Yeh Kahaan Shuru Kahaan Khatam. The title song is another gem in Lata's voice. Other songs - Sheesha-e-Dil Itna Na Uchhalo, Andaaz Mera Mastaana, Mera Dil Ab Tera O Saajna, Jaane Kahaan Gayi, Itni Badi Mehfil Aur Ek Dil etc. are also quite good. Picturization of the songs is also highly impressive.

Technically the movie is good. It's not unduly long also. Though most of the scenes are either in the hospital or in the household, the scenes containing the river are quite beautiful. The cinematographer has excelled like anything in the picturization of the title song. And finally, the climax has been picturized sensationally.

All in all, director Kishore Sahu has done a remarkable job. It's a movie which will be liked by all - the people involved in the noble profession of medicine, the viewers liking romantic musicals, the social drama audience and the movie buffs in general as well. It's a precious gem from the black and white era of Bollywood. Don't miss it.

An Empty Suit

This has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Were not Robert Foster so handsome and myself so compulsive I would have pulled the plug early on.

The action and plot unbelievable the script terrible with an idiotic happy moralistic ending of sorts. But saying that much gives it too much credit..this movie comes as close to having zero content as anything I have ever watched. There is nothing to dislike as there is no content to the thing.

An ambitious young gangster Robert Foster breaks off from his gang early in his career to form his own killing enterprise. His weapon of choice= a machine gun in a music box (title). His wife eventually rats on him under pressure from a priest when he decides to take down a special state prosecutor.

But I can't stress how absolutely cardboard like without any suspense this thing is...how flat the dialog and unimaginative the story. It is almost like a handful of untalented actors were told to invent it ad lib as the cameras rolled.

Usually I will dislike a movie for something it does...this one I disliked because it does nothing it has zero content in terms of story and acting. It truly is an empty suit. Also unsurprising it is not a B movie but a Z- movie in terms of budget and props as well. It could have been written in an hour and filmed in an afternoon.

One funny thing...this is a costume movie of the 20s made in 1960..however even this is done on the cheap most of the extra women look straight out of 1960 dresses and make up wise with a small unconvincing twists.

colorful, exciting Italian swashbuckler w/ Lex Barker

In this exciting, colorful Italian 1960 swashbuckling costume drama, Lex Barker plays Commander Luis Monterrey, a man who is seemingly successful and powerful (although an interesting early scene makes clear that although Monterrey is allowed to attend important social functions and mingle with the rich, he is NOT one of them, and is expected to "know his place" in society), representing Spain as a naval officer in the mid-1500s. You might be expecting a usual captain hero vs. bad pirates plot based on the first twenty minutes, but the film makes an interesting about-face, and then goes in a very different direction, which I won't give away. Barker handles the role convincingly, and is paired against, then with, pirate head Livio Lorenzon. One of Lorenzon's associates is played by Black American expatriate actor John Kitzmiller. The film could use some more swordplay, but overall, it's an exciting, well-played and well-photographed genre-film, for those who like Italian costume adventures. And the charismatic Lex Barker once again shows why he became such a popular actor in Europe in the late 50s and early 60s. This film was once a staple on US local TV twenty years ago, but an internet search should get you a VHS copy if you really want one...and the legit VHS copy, licensed from ZIV Television, that is circulating is of excellent quality.

Review :

LOVE IN ROME (Dino Risi, 1960) ***

The plot of this little-known but very well-made romantic drama (from the generic title, one could well mistake it for just another example of teen-oriented fluff which proliferated in Italy at this time!) anticipates high-profile works by acclaimed film-makers such as Joseph Losey’s EVA (1962) and John Schlesinger’s Oscar-winning DARLING (1965). Here, the femme fatale-ish heroine (who can’t bring herself to remain faithful to her true love for very long) is played by luscious French starlet Mylene Demongeot – in what is probably her most significant role; the hero by American Peter Baldwin, whom I best recall from THE GHOST (1963) – one of the better examples of Italian Gothic Horror.

As with the afore-mentioned EVA, the heroine has set her sights on a movie career: however, she only seems to be able to secure parts in low-brow peplums (of which Demongeot herself made a few!)…and, amusingly, one of the country’s foremost film-makers – Vittorio De Sica – turns up in a cameo as the flustered director of one of them!! Still, the real protagonist here is Baldwin – who, being an essayist, is made to provide first-person commentary to smooth over occasional gaps in the narrative (the events occur over a number of months at least); in fact, he’s himself involved with two other women during the course of the film – Elsa Martinelli (the film even begins with the two having a row at night in Rome’s famed Piazza di Spagna) and Maria Perschy (who happens to be the intelligent but virtuous daughter of a friend of Baldwin’s father, a lecher who numbers Demongeot among his flings!). Though given obviously subsidiary roles, both Martinelli and Perschy play flesh-and-blood characters rather than mere stereotypes (frustrated with Demongeot’s capricious nature, at one point the hero proposes to upper-class Perschy but is unable to follow it through); the cast also includes Claudio Gora (appearing as Perschy’s father) and, as two of the heroine’s copious conquests, Jacques Sernas and Umberto Orsini.

While the film is adult, perceptive and generally absorbing, it’s not quite in the same league as, say, the comparable work of Michelangelo Antonioni: its main flaw in this regard has to do with the contrived plotting of the latter stages, which renders the whole slightly tiresome by the end; on the other hand, the lighting (alternately gleaming and shadowy) is exquisite throughout – giving LOVE IN ROME not only a pleasingly polished look but a genuine sense of style. Incidentally, given Risi’s reputation for caustic humor, one welcomes the De Sica incident I referred to earlier amid all the gloom, or the subtle yet side-splitting image of a fat middle-aged man apathetically smoking and gulping down food (simultaneously) at a party while Baldwin is frantically trying to reach Demongoet on the phone; there’s also a cute in-joke, wherein the aspiring-actress heroine says she had already appeared in a film called POVERI MA BELLI (1957) – directed by none other than Dino Risi himself! – but that her part had ended up on the cutting-room floor!

Lieutenant Tom Cantrell is sent to defend Sergeant Braxton Rutledge, a black cavalry soldier, on a charge of rape and murder. The story begins in a courtroom and it is told through flashbacks. This is a story of how a black soldier in the face of danger from the Indians can be so easily mistaken as a criminal.

"I'm a man."

I first caught the tail end of this John Ford masterpiece on AMC during Black History month, and couldn't wait for it to pop up on the schedule again so I could see the whole thing. I couldn't believe I had never heard of this film before, and after I did some research and discovered how reviewers in 1960 had dismissed it, I understood why. They went expecting To Kill A Mockingbird and got Breaker Morant instead. Ford was WAY ahead of his time with this one. Woody Strode, who plays the title character, helped break the color barrier in professional football years before Jackie Robinson did so in baseball. And he broke some huge barriers in this film, too. Every young black man -- heck, every young American male today -- should be required to watch this film. As Strode later said, Ford and script writers "put classic words in my mouth." Words that would be echoed three years later by Dr. Martin Luther King in his immortal "I Have A Dream" speech at the Lincoln memorial.

THE BARBARIANS aka REVAK THE REBEL (Rudolph Mate', 1960) **

Jack Palance was one of the Hollywood stars to work most prolifically in Europe and, since the 1950s and 1960s were the cinema's Epic heyday, he was often asked to appear in this type of fare. The film under review, in fact, was the first of 3 he made in quick succession (and increasing merit) – with the others being SWORD OF THE CONQUEROR (1961; which shortly followed this viewing) and THE MONGOLS, dating from the same year.

Incidentally, since REVAK THE REBEL was better-known as THE BARBARIANS, I decided to watch a triptych of films by that name (one made prior to it, in 1953, and the other much later i.e. 1987, but all emanating from Italy)!; that said, REVAK itself has a fair number of significant credits allotted to Hollywood veterans – apart from director Mate' (who would later make the superior THE 300 SPARTANS [1962]), we have cinematographer Carl Guthrie and even scriptwriters John Lee Mahin and Martin Rackin! Unfortunately, the copy I acquired was far from optimal as the color of the print was so washed-out that the visuals came off almost as black-and-white: the only previous time I recall such a drastic deterioration was while watching DESERT LEGION (1953) – curiously enough, another spectacle from this era.

Anyway, as for the film itself, it proved rather a disappointment – a pale (read: low-brow) mix of perhaps the cycle's two most accomplished examples, namely BEN-HUR (1959) and SPARTACUS (1960). In fact, heir to the throne (of the Celts!) Palance is taken hostage by the invading Carthaginians (led by Guy Rolfe) but soon reduced to a mere slave – after his sister had already committed suicide on facing the prospect of being defiled! The rest sees him gaining allies, all similarly disgraced, within the court (a Roman noblewoman and an officer-turned-gladiator-trainer, as well as a Spartan mercenary) in order to turn the tables on his captors; in the meantime, his rebellious spirit also catches the eye of his nemesis' own sister. Still, the film ends up supplying far more talk than action (mainly relegated to the climactic bloodthirsty bout, which also has the leading lady marked for death, spared and ultimately dumped by the hero) and, as I said, basically hinges exclusively upon Palance's trademark intensity for the mild interest the picture elicits from its intended audience.

Richard Murphy's The Wackiest Ship in the Army

In this WWII comedy, Jack Lemmon plays a young lieutenant who

finally gets command of his own ship- a small sailboat with an

inexperienced crew. Rick Nelson is his second in command, and

the ship must sail. This lightweight comedy is not terribly funny, but

not bad, either.

The breezy feel of the film is helped by an almost complete lack of

plot. Lemmon takes the boat through dangerous waters watched

by the Japanese, picks up an Australian spy who tracks Japanese

navy positions from the jungle, and sails him to the jungle. The

ship is captured, but our heroes escape and return back to base.

Aside from the Japanese, the only other conflict is between

Lemmon and the ageless Richard Anderson, who plays a hard

nosed commander ready to take over the sailboat.

The film works mostly because of Lemmon. He is so good and so

likable here, you forget little things like a romantic subplot that

never pans out. Nelson even finds a chance to croon a song,

giving us a break from the loud, unsubtle musical score.

Despite the title, most of the humor here is derived from the men's

war situation; not anything terribly wacky happens. There are

laughs, two running gags involve people knocking themselves on

the head, and a funny one involving Lemmon's quest for a decent

cup of coffee. Another light moment that is not pounded into the

ground- the men dress as natives, complete with grass skirts and

coconut shell bras, to fool the enemy into thinking they are a local

trading ship. The scene is funny without being racist and offensive.

The suspense about the mission is often undermined by a

reliance on stock footage to show battle scenes. This is a comedy,

yet we are watching actual footage of war, and this is a little

unsettling. When director Murphy is allowed to shoot his own

action sequences, they work, especially the cruise through the

mined harbor.

"The Wackiest Ship in the Army" spawned a television show, and

that is about the level of the script. This is nothing that will change

your life, but watching Lemmon's comic skills and good nature

make this an enjoyable enough time filler. I slightly recommend it.

This is unrated, and contains some physical violence, some gun

violence, and mild adult situations.

Review :

Bunuel's best in English

Buñuel's second and final English language film (his first being Robinson Crusoe in 1954) is a racial issues movie, albeit quite a bit more complex than your average Stanley Kramer type of stuff. Traver (Bernie Hamilton), running from a false rape accusation, lands his boat on an island somewhere off the coast of a Southern state. That island is inhabited by only two people, although a third has only recently passed away. Evalyn (Key Meersman) is an uneducated teenager. Her grandfather is the recently deceased. Her grandfather's partner (they cultivate honey on the island) is Miller (Zachary Scott, the star of Jean Renoir's The Southerner). Miller, an older man, has designs on young Evalyn. He is also a vile racist, and delights in treating Traver cruelly. The film is very good in most regards. The script is fine, the performances (save that of Claudio Brook, a Mexican actor who delivers his English lines very awkwardly; either that, or they were dubbed badly by someone else) are wonderful. My only complaint is that the movie's denouement is a little weak. It's a gripping picture most of the way through, and it's a tad disappointing that it doesn't build to all that much. Still, a very good and underrated flick. Please note that Lionsgate's new Buñuel box set, which also includes Gran Casino, his first Mexican film, has the two films mislabeled. I popped in Gran Casino, only to get The Young One. I've confirmed that disc labeled The Young One does have Gran Casino on it. So if you want one from Netflix and not the other, keep this in mind.
