A Real Charmer: Comfort Viewing At It's Best

The celebrated author on whose novel it was based despised the film version, describing it as "mawkish." The star wasn't much more enthusiastic; she never considered it among her best work. And the reviews were mixed. But regardless of what Truman Capote, Audrey Hepburn, or the critics thought about it, the public adored it--and the image of Audrey Hepburn wearing a black evening dress, nibbling pastry, and window shopping has passed into our cultural iconography.

The film is indeed lightweight stuff. Audrey Hepburn is a New York good-time girl who makes a living by clipping her wealthy escorts for fifty here and fifty there. When she meets handsome George Peppard--a writer who makes ends meet by trading favors with society matron Patricia Neal--can love be far behind? But Audrey's mysterious past and her determination to marry rich, George's status as a kept boy-toy, and their occasionally questionable associates provide plenty of complications to fill out the story.

What makes the film work is the remarkable charm of its two stars. Most of the attention goes to Audrey Hepburn and the film shows her to remarkable advantage: she is a remarkable actress, personality, and beauty, and she works wonders with the ultralight script. But when it comes to charm, George Peppard is no slouch either: the film catches him at the height of his early golden-boy good looks, and he is the perfect foil for Hepburn in both their comic and dramatic scenes. Mickey Rooney's excessive performance as Yunioshi aside, the supporting cast is also very entertaining, with Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam, and Dorothy Whitney all give enjoyable turns. The film looks great (make sure you get the widescreen version), the score (which includes "Moon River") is excellent, and director Blake Edwards keeps everything moving at a pleasant pace. This a great film to cozy up with on a cold night--romantic, entertaining, and as comforting as a cup of hot chocolate. Recommended.

An Italian Norse Opera

A couple of Hollywood names Cameron Mitchell and Edmond Purdom who were finding it harder and harder to get decent big screen roles with the coming of television spent some time in Italy in the Sixties doing all kinds of film genres. In The Last Of The Vikings the two are on opposite sides as Viking prince Mitchell seeks to reclaim the throne of his father which has been stolen by Purdom the usurper.

In Hollywood in some of his more known features, Edmond Purdom was said to be wooden by some critics. To make up for that Purdom chews an entire carpet factory in his performance. It reminded me of Jay Robinson as Caligula on steroids it was that overacted. Purdom was such a nut case I found it hard to believe anyone would join in a revolt with this loony tune as a usurper.

As a study in the extent that overacting can be carried on screen, I recommend watching The Last Of The Vikings, otherwise beware.

Don't cry for me Mexico

"Bello recuerdo" is probably Joselito Jimenez's most ambitious film.The screenplay is less simplistic than in the former works.There's even a very good scene,which is exceptional in Joselito's faithful director Del Amo's conventional work: the boy and the grandma are watching an old movie of the "mother" and suddenly the old woman remembers things of her past as on the screen horsemen are riding away.

Joselito (whose name in the film is "Jose",for he is 14 now)has lost his father and his wicked cousin rejects him...till he learns that the boy's late dad was not that much poor .Meanwhile,the boy's music teacher has received the orphan in her home where her mother,still alive,thinks that it's the return of her grandson,who was kidnapped when the musician was a famous singer/actress in Mexico.Too bad the script writers botch the job and write a dismal ending when,for once,they had a story which did not fall apart after the first reel.

Joselito's voice was changing:he was 14,after all,but it was still impressive whereas in the next movie "El secreto de Tomy",it would sound ravaged.

Hence the necessity to hire a singer to play opposite to him:Libertad Lamarque ,a South American star shared the top of the bill with the wiz kid -it was the first time it had happened since his debut-.They sing duets and she was certainly ideally cast since she had a long career in Mexico and Argentina behind her.(check her biography)

Creepy horror film from Larry Buchanan

We all know Larry Buchanan made uncredited remakes of 50's sci-fi films for AIP-TV which were THE EYE CREATURES (1965), MARS NEEDS WOMEN (1966), CREATURE OF DESTRUCTION (1967), and IT'S ALIVE (1968). But, THE NAKED WITCH was Buchanan's first horror film, that he co-directed with producer Claude Alexander, that was released in theatres.

The film begins with a strange prolouge about the history of witches that padds the short running time. The film then moves on with a college student (Robert Short) who travels to the German town Luckenbach, Texas to write a thesis about the Luckenbach Witch. The villagers do not want to talk about the Luckenbach Witch, but a young girl named Kirska (Jo Maryman) gives the student a book that mentions about the Luckenbach Witch being put to death with a stake in her heart. The book tells the exact location where the witch is buried and the student digs her up. The student pulls the stake out of the decayed corpse, but it causes the witch to come back to life. The witch (played by Libby Hall) murders the decendents of the family that executed her. The student then steps in to stop the killings, until...

Well, I can't spoil it for you. You will have to see it first. THE NAKED WITCH is an entertaining feature with good camerawork, effective acting, and a simple plot. It is not overdone as most people seem to think that is how horror films are made. Though filmed on a budget of $8,000 on 16mm, THE NAKED WITCH looks very lavish and has some creepy moments.

IMDb mentions two video distributors that have THE NAKED WITCH on video: Something Weird Video and Sinister Cinema. If you are leaning towards the Sinister Cinema copy, don't bother because it is a black and white 35mm print that is missing some footage and has horrible sound. Something Weird Video offers the original color version that was restored from Claude Alexander's personal 35mm negative and is uncut.

So get the Something Weird Video copy, sit back and enjoy THE NAKED WITCH.

Pierre Benoit's "Queen Of Atlantis" for kids

L'ATLANTIDE (aka JOURNEY BENEATH THE DESERT, 1961) certainly held promise -Hollywood director Frank Borzage may have started it but European émigré Edgar G. Ulmer finished up and it's his influence that's most apparent. Green, yellow, and blue lighting gave Atlantis an eerie look despite obvious budget restraints and the movie as a whole was well done of its kind but, unfortunately, it bore very little relation to Pierre Benoit's SHE-like source novel, "Queen Of Atlantis". The adult subject matter (filmed at least three times before) became kiddie matinée fodder with an extremely simplistic storyline: a couple of mining engineers get lost in a Saharan sandstorm and discover the lost city of Atlantis where they have to convince its queen that an A-bomb testing site is directly above and her underground empire will be vaporized in 24 hours. The queen falls in love with one of them and that's all she cares about. That's it.

Even though she isn't especially attractive, there's something about Israeli beauty queen Haya Harareet but I can't say the same for her Antinea who's neither immortal nor evil in this re-telling. Her only crime was falling in love in a NY minute and as if that wasn't silly enough, the yards and yards of chiffon she had on made her look like a burlesque queen. Jean-Louis Trintignant and Gian-Maria Volonte didn't have much to do in this Saturday morning time-waster.

Les liaisons dangereuses

This is not what you can call an "easy -watching " film.Only three characters ,an austere screenplay based on a Roger Vailland novel.Although by no means a nouvelle vague style work,the cast and credits over a lugubrious landscape and an ominous music have a Chabrolesque touch .

A couple whose marriage is on the rocks goes hunting in the misty country "look,the husband says ,the landscape is like a woman taking off her clothes".The slow-moving story may infuriate some but it would be too bad to call it a day after the first fifteen minutes for it is par excellence the kind of film which grows on you.

The woman who feels she is getting old (an admirable Simone Signoret)takes the young lovely school mistress (a sensitive mysterious Alexandra Stewart) to her home;in order to infuriate her hubby,she begins to ask her questions about her very intimate life .

Roberte feels that time is passing her by.She has become an alcoholic,her bottle of whiskey within easy reach.Her behavior becomes ambiguous when she begins to transform Helene the young girl mentally as well as physically :she takes her to the casino ;she's afraid her husband might sleep with her young rival ,but in a memorable scene ,she styles the hair of the girl:Signoret is so subtle an actress she can suggest many nuances .Does she want to recreate her youth, her beauty which is slowly fading away?Does she want to win back her husband 's love through a third part? Is she a frustrated lesbian?Claude Chabrol I mention above was certainly influenced by this sequence for his own "les biches" (1967) where there is a similar scene between Stephane Audran and Jacqueline Sassard.

In a word:not for all tastes ,but rewarding.

A LONG WAIT FOR THE ICE REVUE

Not one new idea was used for the worn out story format of putting up a show and hence the viewer has to wait long for the finale that contains nicely done ice-revue scenes. The film is directed competently but without inspiration by Von Cziffra; with this film he remade his own Weisse Traum of 1943, but it is no improvement.

It is up to comics Ruth Stephan and Heinz Erhardt to liven things up (and they are good at it); couple Toni Sailer and Ina Bauer are such good skaters that they are even skating over the thin ice when it comes to the love's interest of the story.

Harvey and Herschell: A Team That Can Be Beat

I have to admit, this review is based on the 36 minute clip (about half) of "Living Venus" now showing in the Something Weird section of Comcast / On Demand. I can't give you the presumably missing juicy details, but what I can tell you is that it's not too bad; acting is decent and the story is OK. This is a curio I wanted to see as much for Harvey Corman (his first film) as for H. G. Lewis (pre-gornography). Kerwin stars as a magazine editor a la Hugh Hefner who launches a monthly stag rag called "Pagan". He discovers "living Venus" D'Hondt in a restaurant and recruits Korman to snap the cheesecake photos. They both pursue D'Hondt, but Kerwin succeeds, and he quickly pimps D'Hondt out to enlist advertisers. Ending is predictable. Korman worked better with Tim Conway.

The Curse Of The Werewolf (1961) **1/2

This film, more by accident than design, has become one of my most-watched Hammer films. Actually, I liked it immediately and, therefore, I return to it willingly...though I wouldn't really rank it among their top films! Still, for being the studio's only stab at the werewolf legend, the plot is pretty stacked with fanciful lore which differs quite a bit from what Universal came up with in the 30s and 40s...or, for that matter, anything that we've seen since! Truth be told, it's highly improbable and even rather silly but, then, the film is so thick with atmosphere throughout (belying the typical low budget) that it doesn't matter at all! Oliver Reed essays his most significant starring role for Hammer with dignity and a brooding quality, in my opinion, and the supporting cast does pretty well by their roles but, again, the film's main asset is its beautiful look (including the wonderful werewolf make-up). I also don't mind the fact that we see the fully-fledged transformation only once as the build-up to it is terrific and the film, on the whole, emerges as one of Fisher's most assured efforts.

A Japanese Pop Art Artifact From the Early 60's

Jean-Luc Godard once described a Jerry Lewis movie as the "acme of stupidity." But that description might fit this movie better. Killer on Parade is a farce so broad that it cannot be called called a comedy, as it is so far from any human experience that there aren't any laughs in it. A spoof of gangster and spy movies, it is so absurd that it's closest analogy is the Batman television series that came a few years later, but only without that show's irony. The movie's plot (such as it is) is about a gang of assassins and the problems they encounter when an assignment they covet is assigned to another. Just describing the assassins can give an idea of how "wacky" this movie is: one is actually a doctor (who carries a black bag that helpfully has the English word Doctor stenciled on it), another is a former athlete who still wears his college football uniform, another is a country bumpkin who carries her pet goat, etc. It's hard to believe the studio thought any adults would be interested in this; it comes across like it was adapted from a bad grade school boy's manga. The only redeeming feature of this movie are its color scheme and sets; the cinematography is riot of color. But other than that, the movie is pretty much a waste of time.

Roughly what you'd expect

I like Bob Hope a lot better than I like Doris Day. This is a Doris-Day style 60s sex comedy, except that the central character's a man with better lines.

Unusually, Bob Hope is a pretty successful lover, but otherwise he plays the normal Bob Hope character in the normal way.

It's mostly a gently enjoyable piece of innocent fluff, played pretty well on the whole. Watch out for a lovely cameo by Agnes Moorehead as the judge.

But for 1961, this was a pretty progressive film. The strong characters are the women, and their story is of fighting the stultifying boredom of housewifery and being respected as people.

Nothing spectacular, but carried out competently. If you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you like.

This is a very colorful, adventurous film, which looks as if it were inspired by the films of Raoul Walsh (in fact, the director, Umberto Lenzi, is known to be a big Raoul Walsh fan). It's too bad that they don't make films like this anymore.

This is an Intelligently-Plotted, Leisurely and Charming Satire

This is another of a large list of service comedies, WWI, WWII and Korea, that were tried by Hollywood producers. Apparently, the idea of being part of an emergency organization of order-givers and not being able to risk one's life actively caused men in uniform to think up fantastic schemes, dream big dreams and want to get back to civilian profit-earning. Case in point--the gentlemen in this happy and very-well-made comedic satire. George Marshall directed these breezy proceedings with his usual genial skill; George Duning provided nice music and Burnett Guffey the colorful and lovely cinematography. The juxtaposition of news-corps uniformed types and Japanese ladies in a place rented by the newsmen for various purposes worked unusually well. In this talented cast are Glenn Ford, Donald O'Connor, Miiko Taka, Miyoshi Umeki, Nancy Kovack, Howard St. John, Michi Kobi, funnyman Joe Flynn, Harlan Warde and talented James Shigeta. Irving Brecher wrote the well-paced screenplay from George Campbell's clever and dialogue-rich novel. Forget the storyline; this is a fine story based on real experiences, exampling the differences between the thinking of the US soldiers and those with whom they deal in another country--in this case, Japan; it is almost a companion piece to "Don't Go Near the Water", only much lower-keyed. It even has a theme--"Be true to yourself", and there are no real villains; only a timetable and romances and the usual GI slightly-illegal goings-on. A vastly underrated and well-remembered film. Watch it, slowly. Enjoy!

Typical yet entertaining b-movie

Sure this film isn't "Rebel Without a Cause". Heck, it isn't even "High School Caeser" or "High School Confedential". However, it is an amusing diversion for a rainy afternoon. Arch Hall Jr. stars as Jack Crusier, the leader of a gang of teenage car-strippers called the Choppers. They are employed by a sleazy character name Big Moose, who runs an auto salvage yard. However, the cops (and one good-looking cop's girlfriend) are quickly closing in on the gang. The film tries (and fails) to offer moral explanation for why the kids act this way, citing bad parenting and neglect. The acting (with the slight exception of Bruno VeSota) is terrible. Also, Arch Hall has to be one of the most bizarre attempts at crafting a teen idol.

So why do I enjoy this film? Its a stereotypical delinquency picture from its time, and is a complete byproduct of the late 50s / early 60s. This film wouldn't get made in any other time. It is campy and amusing, worthy of a small cult following. It's not Hall's best film ("The Sadist" gets that honor, as he actually turns in a stunning performance), but there are worse ways to spend a rainy afternoon. The DVD double feature of this and "Wild Guitar" from Something Weird Video is highly recommended. Entertaining and quickly paced as long as you don't expect art. (4/10)

Known in America as the Thief of Baghdad, this is one of the most under-rated pictures of the last 50 years.

This film has something in it that everyone would enjoy if they just allow themselves to be taken by it. If you have the chance to see it, simply sit there with a snack & beverage and let the film bring you into the land of 1001 Arabian Nights. The music is almost hypnotic, as the theme plays all through the background. The colors and scenery are breathtakingly beautiful. I enjoyed this film when I was a boy. It took me 20 years to find it on a video cassette and expected to be a little disappointed. I wasn't. It was all that I had remembered and more. See this one with your kids!

An angry, biting film

Teen hoodlum Kinta is excited to be given the plum job of supervising the pig pen at the local US base, for which he'll be responsible diverting the food scraps to the black market, and scoring a good income for his yakuza gang. His girlfriend Hiroku earnestly hopes he'll leave the yakuza and get an honest job, but neither is she a paragon of virtue - she is drawn into prostitution and petty thievery. The story mostly follows their troubled relationship, against a backdrop steeped in corruption, which results from the clash of US Forces occupation against the poverty and aspirations of the people of post-war Japan.

A scathing, even cynical critique. There is no tenderness at all here. Even the young lovers embracing is shown more as a desperate clinging than emotional attachment. And corruption is everywhere - there are no good guys. Confronting stuff, well-photographed, memorable as a vivid nightmare.
