Chabrol always could turn on the new-wave schizophrenia. Overly hyper at times, inspired at others.
Based on the novel "La Cle de la Rue Saint-Nicolas," a wine grower of not some little means, finds himself beset with problems on all sides, from his wife, his children, his best friend.....even his lover! Well, truth be known, SHE has problems herself - she is murdered!
Chabrol does a fair Hitchcockian impression, filming the demise of the mistress as he does, entirely with mirrors. Arguably the highlight of the movie.
To appreciate this film it would definitely assist to have had some exposure to French Cinema in the past. You may otherwise find the Chabrolian experience a rude and possibly confusing awakening. Be that as it may, this example of new-wave French artistry is understandably held in high esteem in many places.

What Kind Of Culture Will They Establish?
Harry Belafonte is a coal miner trapped in a cave-in. He hears the drilling of the rescue crew which abruptly stops. Belafonte claws his own way to the surface and finds everything abandoned. I mean really abandoned. An Armageddon has occurred when some nation decided to forego the bomb and all that destruction and just use the radioactive byproducts. It gets out of control and wipes out everybody.
Well, almost everybody. Harry hot wires a car and travels to New York City in search of life in the largest population center. After a while he finds it in Inger Stevens. It looks like another Adam and Eve ready to begin again when Mel Ferrer also shows up. By that time Belafonte has established some kind of contact with some unknown foreign survivors somewhere in the post apocalypse world?
Of course with two men, two races, and only one woman, things start to look like business as usual for mankind. I was reminded of Neil Patrick Harris's line from Starship Troopers about how we're in it for the species. Will all three of them and anyone else they contact decide we're in it for the species in The World, the Flesh and the Devil?
Director Ranald McDougall got three good performances out of his small cast. The World, The Flesh And The Devil does ask some thought provoking questions as to whether man is capable of screwing up once again. What kind of culture will they establish and will a Supreme Creator/Deity need to intervene?

Fatalistic post-war drama about German bomb squad.
Six nonconformed former German soldiers work for the British occupation forces on defusing blind shells in Berlin. The men, of very different characters, make a bet, that those who stay alive should get half of all their pays. Indeed one after another of them perishs. So it comes to the showdown between Koertner (Jack Palance) and Wirtz (Jeff Chandler), who also compete for the affection of their host Margot (Martine Carol).
This exciting adventure movie is staged carefully by past master Robert Aldrich. He shows in fascinating details bomb deactivation and the atmosphere of Berlin lying in ruins - a striking metaphor for the devastated lifes of the characters! Chandler and Palance are believable in their roles. Psychological it impress through the description of the fatefully scratched squad, whose members are not able to get out of this suicidal job.
In short: A depressing but exciting look on World War II survivors, who battle for the reorganization of their lifes.

This is a terrible Tarzan Movie!
After watching this I had to write a comment about it. So many actors played Tarzan, so many directors directed Tarzan, so many actresses played Jane but this one is one of the worst acted and directed Tarzan Movie. Tarzan swings on the Liane to one place to another and then back to the former place. The Movie begins with a hilarious scene about a Watusi on a board of a steamer. We'll never found out what he was doing on the ship and why some wounded leave the ship. I've not seen a Tarzan Movie for a while and of course not all were masterpieces but at least somehow entertaining. This is entertaining but on another way. So bad that's funny and annoying too. There are some bad footage taken from an old BW Tarzan Movie. What did they thought the audience wouldn't recognize black & white scenes in a color movie? There are also other footages taken from other movies. Most of the scenes are terrible hilarious. BTW what is a spider doing on the top of a mountain? Aren't Pygmies people of short stature? Please watch out the attack of the natives. Interesting Tarzan cannot doesn't say many words only the scream in that. The scream is clearly taken from Johnny Weissmuller but I don't think that he would like this movie. Next to the Bo Derek Tarzan this is the worst. Better you don't watch it.

From Vancouver to Timbuktu.
Unofficial sequel (methinks so, anyway) to Yvonne De Carlo's Fort Algiers, this hot and heavy desert drama arrives at the end of Miss De Carlo's initial leap into a Hollywood film career, 1945-59, just before her semi-retirement, and prior to her reemergence as "Lilly Munster," the antithesis of Donna Reed's more perfectly molded vision of motherhood. In this one, American Mature is running guns to the Tuareg tribes, while a French garrison, led by Dolenz, tries their very best to thwart the rebellion and any colonial retribution residue to follow. A love triangle soon erects itself between De Carlo, Dolenz and Mature. It's all very civilized and modern. Dolenz doesn't put up much of a fight. I would. De Carlo is definitely worth fighting for. John Dehner, who played a good guy in Fort Algiers, turns around and becomes the demented, evil Emir in this one. Another sadistic rebel has a scar running down the entire length of his face. Dehner tests one of Mature's automatic weapons on the fellow with the hideous scar. He dies. He later will turn up planted in the Emir's vegetable garden. Nice one. Green thumb? Spiders are cleverly enlisted to torture and kill the French. An Iman is rescued, secreted and forgotten along the way. Strange stuff: a long trek across the sands reveals some legionnaires impaled on spears, like shish-kabobs at an oasis barbecue. It's all a bit convoluted and thematically tangled. But, for the most part, highly recommended for folks who enjoy a few Camels with their Tuareg coffee.

They Came to Cordura
Take Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth, surround them with a core of actors who are still well-known today, add beautiful scenery, tackle a very interesting philosophical question. What's not to like? As it turns out, there's a lot not to like. Coop's role is to portray a world-weary, duty-bound officer, obsessed with heroism. Diappointingly, "wooden" would best describe his take on the role. Hayworth, as tequila-drinking, cigarette-smoking, comforter-of-America's-enemies is, at times, over the top. She's still got the sexy sizzle she's known for, but the sexual tension between her and the men isn't compelling. The supporting members of the cast are supposed to devolve from heroes to louts, but their hand is tipped so early in the movie, that their later actions are expected--not deplored. It's a dark western that would appear to be yin to "The Magnificent Seven"'s yang. Heroes become brutes--brutes become heroes. The later is a lot more entertaining and--a lot more satisfying.

A warm-hearted Cold War comedy of life
This afternoon I chanced upon this terrific film on Channel 4.I had seen it years ago as a child,and couldn't understand why my father kept referring to the brilliant " Our Man in Havana" Now I know what he meant.Alec Guinness hit the perfect note in the part,as he invariably did.Havana is rendered almost tangible by director Carol Reed, a difficult feat to achieve.The rest of the cast shine too.Ernie Kovacs makes a human being out of his police-thug character.The script seems almost improvised,so fresh , pointed and witty.Compare this movie to the bulk of today's garbage,and prepare to feel very let-down by what you can see at your local Multiplex.This strange and sharp movie has re-affirmed my intention to spend some time in Havana.Buena Vista Social Club first whetted my curiosity.This movie is timeless and a great 2 hrs of entertainment/art.Enjoy! And look at Maureen O ' Hara, is she not quite splendid? !

Not bad......
This film begins with Brigitte Bardot falling in love with a dentist (Henri Vidal) and they soon marry. Soon after, he is seduced by a lady and goes back to her apartment. He begins to undress her and stops himself--he can't allow himself to cheat on his bride. He immediately leaves--not knowing that she is a blackmailer and her lover was photographing them in some very compromising positions. This begs the audience to wonder if any man can be THAT stupid and self-destructive, as at the time, Bardot was probably the most beautiful woman in the world (and, yes, I know there ARE men who cheat on their loving wives all the time--even if it makes no sense).
Soon, the lady blackmailer shows up at the Dentist's office and demands money for the photos. A sane man would come clean to his wife right there and then, but this would also make for a VERY short film, so he agrees to meet her later at her dance studio. The poor husband plans on killing the woman but before he can, she's already dead--apparently she has created a lot of enemies! Brigitte arrives soon after him, as she'd overheard the two talking earlier and wondered what was happening between them. Both Bardot and her hubby flee to avoid the police.
Bardot believes her husband when he tells her what happened. However, someone saw him at the studio and the police have a good description of him. So, to save her dumb husband, Brigitte decides to go undercover--and goes to the dance studio to ask for a job. Perhaps someone there knows what happened or was responsible for the killing. And, as this is only about thirty minutes into the film, you can safely assume that SOMETHING will occur sooner or later! This part of the film seemed well-suited for Bardot, as she was an exceptional dancer in real life.
Where the film goes next is pleasant but there aren't too many surprises. Plus, while I like Bardot, this film seemed only okay--nothing special but also not bad in any particular way. The writing is decent, the acting just fine but apart from the role played by a gay transvestite, the rest of the film just seemed ordinary. Non-Bardot fans can skip this one--it's just among her best.
By the way, like many French films of the era, this one if pretty frank about sex and sexuality. You will see some nudity it's obviously quite different from the sort of fare coming out of Hollywood at the same time!

American Law And Jurisprudence
Usually a film held up in release is a sign that nothing good will come of it eventually being inflicted on the movie-going public. But in the case of The Young Land this is not a bad little western about an incident from the early days of California after we acquired it from Mexico. As it was a forcible acquisition the native Mexican population was anxious to see how they would do under American law and jurisprudence.
The issue comes to a head when a murderous young punk played by Dennis Hopper uses his fast draw to gun down a Mexican vaquero who works for Roberto DeLa Madrid. Sheriff Patrick Wayne whose job usually is to jail drunks disarms Hopper and arrests him. Now the job is to try him and for that Wayne sends for a federal judge played by Dan O'Herlihy who is a model of judicial decorum.
O'Herlihy is not terribly impressed with Wayne as a sheriff, but gradually they develop a certain respect for each other. And Wayne also grows some in the estimation of Yvonne Lime, daughter of Robert DeLa Madrid.
The Young Land is a simple straightforward tale told thusly for the audience. It's got some thoughtful and sincere performances by its cast. Hopper stands out in his role. And it even got an Oscar nomination for the song Strange Are The Ways Of Love which lost to the far better known High Hopes.
The story has worn well and The Young Land is as fresh as it was when it was sadly held up in release.

Acceptable and hight budgeted Peplum with the corpulent Steve Reeves
The starring of this ¨Sword and Sandals movie¨is Glauco (Steve Reeves), a Roman official, friend of emperor Tito , returning to his house from Palestine and trying to clean up the doomed town of Pompeii in this new adaptation of the 1935 classic( by Ernet B Schoedsack with Preston Foster and Basil Rathbone). Steve plays a newcomer to Pompeya and he helps the Christians who are pursued by the evil rulers (Guillermo Marin, Fernando Rey) who govern tyrannically Pompeii . The good guys are Steve Reeves, Christine Kaufmann,Angel Aranda and the bad guys are Fernando Rey , Guillermo Marin among others . Meanwhile he saves the damsel in distress(Christine Kaufmann, Tony Curtis wife) of a runaway horse and discovers his daddy has been killed by a band of black-headed nasties. The Christians are accused of killings and Glauco seeks justice. But the eruption of Vesuvius threatens noblemen, slaves and Christians alike.
Steve Reeves was a hunk man who made lots of roman epic films also called ¨Musclemen movies¨. Luck's Reeves changed when Italian director Pietro Francisci persuaded him to go overseas to star ¨Hercules¨ and sequel ¨Hercules and queen of Lydia also titled Hercules unchained ¨, and later on, he followed with ¨Goliath and the Barbarians, The giant of Marathon, The Trojan horse, The son of Spartacus and The Avenger¨ among them . Steve was an American bouncing who emigrated Italy and created a true star-system based on pumped-up heroes. He paved the way for others actors to seek their fame and fortune in Italy playing bouncing adventurers . Other stars by the time on this type of movies are Mark Forest, Gordon Mitchell, Dan Vadis, Brad Harris and 'Gordon Scott' who made him more important competence. Nobody, nevertheless, topped Steve in popularity. Steve Reeves as Glaucus, a soldier who woo avenge, is solid, though uninspired, in the lead role as an honest legionnaire caught up in the momentous deeds prior to eruption but acting honors go to Fernando Rey as nasty high priest.This historic epic about Roman time and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius really bears no relation whatsover to Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton's novel and much of the dialog is of the wooden variety. The film is a Spanish/ West Germay/Italian co-production that were largely shot during the 60s in Spain and Italy. The film bears remarkable resemblance to ¨The Colossus of Rhodes ¨(1961) including the explosive spotlight when ground shaking and the town blows its top, besides repeat several actors as Mimmo Palmara, Antonio Casas, Angel Aranda, Carlo Tamberlani as leader of Christians , technicians , producers, same cameraman : Antonio L. Madrid is in the years 50, and four young people are gathered in a kiosk routinely to make their plans. They are Andres, who works as buttons in a hotel and his dream is to become bullfighter. "El Chispa" , who works as dependent on the kiosk. Carlos that is a student, and "El Negro"" which is a shy boy. The four boys have a feel enormous of fun, but they are at that stage of adolescence in the faced steadily with the world of the elderly, As when they see a film for over 18 years and are rejected by the entrance. When Carlos the student, love with his neighbor that is older than him, and not get to pay attention, Or "El Negro" in his shyness, does not cover the relations between people who sees in his mother. The characters of the film are well represented, and another great protagonist is the scenario, in this case the streets of Madrid., and the characters varied that appear filled the film.It's in the indent the lack of Rafael Azcona, which would undoubtedly would have given that spark that bear all his scripts. I really enjoyed this film of Marco Ferreri, who along with films like "El Cochecito", and "El Pisito" form the trilogy Spanish this good director

A forgotten classic
This film by Henri Verneuil showed Fernandel in one of his best roles. Today he is still funny as a cheeky but down-to-earth man with simple needs who is dragged into impossible situations. This is an out-of-the-ordinary "love story" between a man and and a stubborn cow (the animal of course, nothing offensive let me reassure you) called Marguerite...I like the twist at the end after all their little adventures.
Charmingly dated but worth seeing again if you are feeling a bit nostalgic !

An entertaining brew of biceps and babes
It's easy to get these Italian sandal-and-spear movies mixed up, but clearly the best "hero" to emerge from the genre was Steve Reeves. His mere presence elevates a movie from the "also-ran" to the "must-see" status. Reeves looks great in this predictable but lively outing which has him tied between two horses charging in opposite directions. Rather than being pulled apart like a wishbone, Reeves manages to rein them in, and you know something? His powerful physique and straining muscles almost make this seem plausible. The dubbing, as usual, is sloppy, but hey, who's looking at the lips?

With a little bit of more action and the natural (for 1959) propaganda message, Valurile Dunarii is one of the first masterpieces of Liviu Ciulei. If you ignore the propaganda part - the fearful soldiers who jump over the lines into the machine guns and the final scene demonstration, this film is only a love story in times of war. This goes a little between 'Salaire de la peur' with Yves Montand and 'Casablanca' as they go with a barge of ammunition on a mined Danube.
The same black atmosphere as in "Padurea spînzuratilor". It was the acting debut for Irina Petrescu (very nice :) ). I saw this film tonight on TV and it has some problems with the sound. Good and solid acting by Liviu Ciulei itself - a complex character who loves in times of war, a rough person but also a survivor.

Having fled to Mexico from the U.S. many years ago for killing his father's murderer, Martin Brady travels to Texas to broker an arms deal for his Mexican boss, strongman Governor Cipriano Castro. Brady breaks a leg and while recuperating in Texas the gun shipment is stolen. Complicating matters further the wife of local army major Colton has designs on him, and the local Texas Ranger captain makes him a generous offer to come back to the states and join his outfit. After killing a man in self defense, Brady slips back over the border and confronts Castro who is not only unhappy that Brady has lost his gun shipment but is about to join forces with Colton to battle the local raiding Apache Indians.

nice elegiacal western
just caught this thoughtful film on TV again.
not a particular Mitchum fan, but here he is gives a wonderful world weary performance as the "outside man" gradually learning kindness and companionship and friendship against the odds of his upbringing and circumstances and the hand that fate has dealt him.
Not a particular shoot em up type western but a film about belonging and extricating yourself from a bad lot when down a blind alley. Just watch as he reacts to the little kindnesses as he recovers from his injury or the final scene with his beloved horse, lovely low key acting.
Beautiful photography too. Passes a lazy afternoon very nicely.

Wizard Of Oz on steroids!
This film just blew me away and I didn't even have English subtitles or dubbing on the copy that I viewed. It was all Russian, and I don't speak a lick of it! It didn't matter. The language barrier couldn't stop me from seeing it's greatness. The music and song and dance numbers are very fun, bizarre, and compelling. This is maybe the most colorful and bizarre movie I have ever seen. The miniature girl dance sequence and the song and dance sequence near the end of the film with the main under-water kingdom guy with all the hair is bouncing his butt on the stairs, well that whole sequence and the other one I mentioned are just brilliant and beautiful. I'm really loving these films by Alexander Rou as well as Alexander Ptushko's films.

A rare polish war drama
I am lucky enough to have some pushers who can provide me with rare war films from all over the world. Especially from Eastern Europe countries such as Germany, Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Japan, and so on. From these countries, many movies were never been released more west. I have seen a little batch, thanks to these guys. This one makes me think of another film from Poland too, telling the story of a group of young underground resistant movement against Nazis. Nothing really new if you compare with the other features, not at the same scale as L'ARMEE DES OMBRES, the best film ever about this kind of topic. But the characterization for this one is rather good, the score and filming too.
Worth seeing. And keep in mind that there are many others like this one which we probably never see.
