Elvis Is Fresh

Back in Hollywood, after a two-year stint in the US army, Elvis Presley (as Tulsa McLean) is a stationed-in-Germany singing soldier out to bed sexy dancer Juliet Prowse (as Lili). This tailor-made film set the standard for the successful "ELVIS" movie. Presley spent the 1960s swinging and singing through "Top Ten" box office and record charts. "G.I Blues" propelled Elvis back into Quigley Publications "Box Office" ten most profitable movie stars, where he stayed through 1966. The RCA soundtrack went platinum, and was #1 for ten of its amazing 111 weeks on the LP chart. RCA planned no 45 RPM singles (which helped album sales), but "Wooden Heart" and "G.I. Blues" became hits anyway.

Unfortunately, the musical's trend-setting success overshadowed Presley's superior studio recordings from the time (listen to "Elvis Is Back!"). Also note, the re-recording of "Blue Suede Shoes" is a pale imitation of the 1956 original. So, a creative cancer was being forged. But, it's not fair to fault "G.I. Blues" for the sight and sound of Elvis Presley singing "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" in "Double Trouble" (1967). And, although everyone (including Presley) longed for him to be a great dramatic actor, he shows up in "G.I. Blues" as a charming and natural light performer. Herein, Presley introduces many of the playful mannerisms used throughout the remainder of his career, in musicals and on stage.

new in socialistic film industry

After WWII in socialrealistic countries films from west was forbidden. But hunger of public for films was great as in countries from the west, especially for action films and western. In Yugoslavia communist authorities try with some action films called "partiaznski filmovi" (partisan films) made substitution for actions films from west. In this manner made this film. But Yugoslavia was something else from others countries behind "iron curtain" and filmmakers have some kind of freedom in they artistic attempt. This film was one in the series of action films (partizanski filmovi) where with some most popular actor in this time in Yugoslavia, Aleksandar Gavric ( whose appearance remind on film stars from USA) , made brake trough in freedom in social realistic film industry. Story based on realistic event was presented to the public in the manner of good action film, of course in regard to place and time where and when was made. The sixties was years when Tito opened Yugoslavia's borders and film from the West Europe (Italian and French films) and USA come back in Yugoslav's movie theaters but partisans films stay with they popularity together with best films from the west for most film fans in Yugoslavia. This film for me has historical value as artistic because it describe some realistic event in the time of WWII and describe time when this film was made.

This classic story will always be entertaining...

When I watched this movie as a child, I was amazed and in awe by this adventure story that unfolded before me. In spite of the fact that I'm now older and more critical of the films I view, I couldn't help but admire the acting of Peter Finch and the others. Upon a recent viewing, I realized that much of the depth that makes this film so enjoyable was extremely overlooked in my youth. While the adventure is no "Jurassic Park," the story that unfolds about friendship, courage and determination allows me to recognize this film, not only as a childhood favorite, but as a timeless classic which I think people of all ages can and will enjoy. Rent it, buy it or borrow it--you won't be disappointed!

A Very Watcable "Innocent" Film

This story is about Innocencio, played by Catinflas, who cannot read or write. He receives a letter and vows not to read it until he can read or write. The letter states he was to inherit two million pesos due to a deceased uncle, but Innocencio does not know this. In the interim, Innocencio gets a maintenance job at the local bank due to his being honest and also meets Blanca, played by the pretty Lilia Prado, who works as a maid for the rich people in town. They fall in love. By mistakenly dropping the letter he has not read yet, a few unscrupulous bank co-workers look to steal the money he is right to inherit. The draws to this film include the chemistry between Catinflas and Lilia Prado, as well as the general good versus evil theme which is part of the story. While not a great film, its a pleasant light comedy with very likable characters. I recommend it for that, as well as to see Catinflas and Lilia Prado together, who were both very popular actors in Mexican cinema for some time.

A rare polish war drama

I am lucky enough to have some pushers who can provide me with rare war films from all over the world. Especially from Eastern Europe countries such as Germany, Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Japan, and so on. From these countries, many movies were never been released more west. I have seen a little batch, thanks to these guys. This one makes me think of another film from Poland too, telling the story of a group of young underground resistant movement against Nazis. Nothing really new if you compare with the other features, not at the same scale as L'ARMEE DES OMBRES, the best film ever about this kind of topic. But the characterization for this one is rather good, the score and filming too.

Worth seeing. And keep in mind that there are many others like this one which we probably never see.

Very good family entertainment, I'd like to see it on video

Edward G. Robinson, Dan Daily, & Cantinflas (as Pepe) were very convincing in their major rolls in this movie. The guest star list was enormous and included just about everyone who was hot in Hollywood. My favorite was Bobby Darin during his zenith. This movie is like a time capsule from 1960 and would make a great addition to a collection of family entertainment videos.

Adequate UK TV-style Low-Budgeter

A decently made,fairly entertaining attempt to make a mini-budget suspense spy thriller with a very familiar British cast;the supporting players are actually more characterful than leads Tony Britton and Virginia Maskell;Ian Bannen was usually cast in intense roles and he does a fine job here as a tortured and tragic soul disabled by circumstance,and there's reliable support from such British stalwarts as Donald Pleasence,Thorley Walters,Raymond Huntley and Kenneth Griffith.The quirkiest performance though comes from legendary comic genius Spike Milligan as an Irish caretaker;his scenes of comic relief work quite well,though there isn't enough of them.

The limitations of production sometimes work against the film,as does a fairly routine and unremarkable plot,but some neat touches by the Boultings,as well as the above performers,make SUSPECT a perfectly watchable effort.

A rave review for this film!

If you know just a little German, you will enjoy this film. The casting is perfect and the acting is so subtle and intelligent that you will get a lot out of each scene, even if you don't understand every word. This movie was done from a stage production by Brecht's own company, using the techniques of epic theater that he invented, so there is a certain restraint, even dryness, to the style that is supposed to make it easier for the viewer to think about the issues. Regardless of your politics, however, once you've seen this production, others will pale by comparison. The script is based upon a very old story about female merchants who followed the troops to do business during wars. They are a tough breed, and Helen Weigel, who plays the title role, certainly conveys that.

Witty musical comedy with a surprise cameo

This musical romance concerns the tragic entanglements of a beautiful Gypsy girl named Lolita in 1892 Spain. Lolita is singing at a party which she has crashed and she meets the wealthy Fernando, who is posing as a waiter to flirt with her. They begin to fall in love. Yet after Lolita finds out Fernando is engaged, she is devastated and moves to Paris; there she makes her glamorous debut at the Tabarín club. Fernando reads of her great success and goes to Paris to see her. Cult starlet Soledad Miranda has a cameo in this movie. This was an important film for Jess Franco as it was his entry into the professional film world. Several years later, Soledad became Franco's star in numerous movies (Count Dracula, Eugénie, Les cauchemars naissent la nuit, Sex Charade, Vampyros Lesbos, She Killed in Ecstasy, and The Devil Came from Akasava). Oddly enough, the French version is in black and white and begins several scenes into the Spanish version, at the introduction of Fernando.

Empty, talky fluff, but the women are insanely gorgeous

I watched this unknown movie only because it has two of the most beautiful actresses who ever lived - Elke Sommer and Sylva Koscina - in its cast. I can't say I was completely disappointed - they both appear in skimpy clothing and they both are criminally sexy (the rest of the ladies are nice-looking as well) - but if you want to see them in a film that actually gives them something to do, check out their next pairing, the 1966 spy adventure "Deadlier than the Male". "Femmine di lusso" is meant to be a romantic comedy about the various relationships between the people who are travelling on a private cruise ship somewhere off the coasts of Italy. But there is so little chemistry between the pairs that we don't care who ends up with who; as for the comedy, the movie's only - and I do mean ONLY - joke is that the ship's owner thinks a photographer on board is gay and tries to keep his son away from him. The film is mostly talk, interrupted only for some sightseeing of the beautiful Italian locations. The silliest element: Elke Sommer is in love with the photographer I mentioned above, but he prefers looking at other girls and he considers her a burden (!!!). Having him kidnapped by aliens would have been more believable. (**)

terrific beginning some lengths in the middle

Kiyoshi is a student with a completely immoral attitude towards women (and other things too). His young lover Makoto seeks adventure with him. Unlike her younger sister, a former left winger she doesn't bother about changing the society but she just wants fun, but the completely egotist attitude of her lover brings about ruin for both.

the beginning of the film which is ingenious and visually very inspiring is followed by a rather mediocre middle part, where their method of gaining money by luring middle aged men into a trap is described excessively. Nevertheless you don't get to know if the first scene of the film is already a part of that profession or a mere accident.

Faith and Human Nature

The Virgin Spring is a film so graceful, subtle and omniscient that when we experience powerfully emotional moments, we haven't even expected them, and when we have, it's already hit us. With every detail of every department, the result is utter simplicity, utter docility, no fluctuation in the face of whatever brutality or emotional quakes, making them all that much more profoundly moving. The story reveals and illustrates the characters up until the fatal flaw causes the end of the movie to be inevitable, but we never saw that particular element that way, because everything is utterly natural.

Its pitch-perfect genuine bloom is the effect of the film being pared down to its barest intentions. And these are not only fundamental questions, but fundamental questions in a time and place in history where needs and desires were purely fundamental. The characters, existing in medieval Sweden, could have no concept of how complicated human beings' intentions could be as they are in modern times. It begins with a prosperous Christian whose daughter, Karin played by Birgitta Pattersson, is appointed to bring candles to the church. This is a big deal around here. Karin is accompanied by her pregnant foster sister, Ingeri played by Gunnel Lindblom, who secretly worships a Norse pagan God. What conflict! What happens from there, I will not say. But anywhere you may read about this film you will see that it was the basis for Wes Craven's exploitation flick The Last House on the Left, but in that exploitation of a genuine bloom of grace, the ensuing turning points in the plot achieve the exact opposite effect in every way I've explained. When you see The Virgin Spring, you will be presented with people who search for the same answers and consolations most of us still seek today. Even if a viewer would sooner find themselves watching Craven's film than anything by Ingmar Bergman, once they would get around to The Virgin Spring, they'd find themselves subjected to an unexpected, and wholly memorable, experience more rare than the later film.

Max Von Sydow's performance is truly unforgettable in every sense of the word, burning every line of his ultimate soliloquy into you with an impact lasting longer than the movie or the day you see it. He is a giant, unabashedly masculine yet incapable of artifice. Even so, he stands out no more than any other actor, all of whom beautifully share the screen with one another, which emboldens the impact of where his character goes.

Ulla Isakkson's story yields a multitude of moral examinations in our minds. There are certain peculiar characters who have no human sympathy and are unashamed of a laundry list of barbarities. Bergman shows the Christian Orthodox family spending every waking moment preoccupied with purity, altruism and decency in the eyes of the god they passionately look to with faith that the world they live in is inherently good and just. Their concept of evil is the notion of a Pagan god. How are they to act when crossing paths with the former set of characters?

Good Tough Adventure

Based on a book by B. Traven, author of "The Treasure of Sierra Madre."

The film is well acted, vividly photographed and distinctly better than we have any right to expect.

It depicts a fugitive sailor's time on a tramp steamer, with lots of tough guys, much grubby detail, a catastrophe and an amazing final image that will stay with you long after you've forgotten the rest of the film. Very worthwhile.

When will German DVD makers get smart and put English and French subtitles on their discs? A little extra expense would give them a worldwide clientele instead of just selling to two countries.

P;ease read if you are interested in the film

It has been many a year since I have seen "Light Up The Sky" but the first and remaining impression was one of Honesty. The presented story, acting and setting is completely honest.It reflects a real sentiment of the times and that for my opinion is very rare.The only down side is that the whole historical times of the film are very much sliding into the fast vanishing past. The film will be forgotten and our memories will die with us...very sad. You can sometimes obtain a used VHS tape from Ebay but it always reaches over $40. Why this is so has been a surprise to me not for the lack of quality in the film to command a good price but the persons around who are willing to purchase.

MASTERPIECE - A must see

A little group of people in Israel decides to track down a treasure which, according to the legend, is placed in the city of Petra in the kingdom of Jordan. No man ever survived this treasurehunt "to the other side" (of the jordan river) before and the adventure ends up with fatal consequences.

What can I say ? It´s simply a masterpiece: Much better than the best Meryl Streep movie ever made. Even the special effects makes Cameron´s "Titanic" look like home made Super 8.

The fact that the actors are calling the city CITRA and not PETRA proves the high quality of art which is simply magnificant in this movie: Cant´t you see ???? The audience have to make a debate after the movie of "the higher meaning"

If some of you can´t see this supreme art the emperors tailors would call you STUPID.
